My name is Cindy Avilla, and I am a certified orthoptist. I have been an allied health professional in Ophthalmology, involved in the evaluation and treatment of children and adults with ocular misalignments and dysfunctions of binocular vision, for over 30 years. I graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science degree in Orthoptics. My degree was conferred following completion of 15 months of orthoptic training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and receipt of my national orthoptic certification through the American Orthoptic Council after successfully passing both national written and oral board examinations in 1977.
During my 30 year career, I have been actively involved in my profession's national organization, the American Association of Certified Orthoptists and its counterpart, the International Orthoptic Association. Additionally, for the past 20 years I have been an active orthoptist member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, a national organization of pediatric ophthalmologists and certified orthoptists who strive to provide comprehensive medical and surgical care for children and adults with strabismus, and promote education of problems affecting binocular vision and ocular misalignment to other health care professionals and the general public.
