"I recently discovered your Ortopad Occlusion Eye Patches. I, however, am not a kid- I am 22 years old. When I was about 16 months old I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis in both of my knees, a finger, and a toe. Luckily, I have been in remission since I was about 5 years old. One of the complications of JRA, is uveitis/iritis- inflammation of the iris. As a result, my right eye has always been a lot weaker and suffered from amblyopia/lazy eye. There is not much else I would rather do than stop a child's pain. We were told to patch our one year old about 3 months ago. No specific patch was suggested. When we would remove the patch, of course, it was traumatic as the baby's skin would want to come also! After the second time, I said no more, I got on the internet to find out what other parents were doing for this problem. I found many that were going through the same thing. I did read where one parent had tried Ortopad and gave it rave reviews. We ordered some. They were great for not removing skin, but for a one year old they just didn't stick tight enough. When we had our first visit to a major children's hospital in Kansas City, MO, we told the doc of the problem. He immediately knew what to do. He had us get some Benzoin Compound Tincture U.S.P. You outline the area of the eye where the Ortopad will stick, wait about 30 seconds until it becomes tacky, then place the Ortopad into position. The patch remains on even with little fingers and fists rubbing at it, and at the time of removal, the skin is protected and its integrity preserved! A nice safe way to patch your baby's eye without causing trauma to both baby and parents. I would hope you have some way to spread this method for babies. God bless you for making a wonderful product. My 15 month old is undergoing surgery as I write to correct his amblyopia. Hopefully we will need not patch again, but if we should, we know where to order the best patches.

"This is a testimonial concerning an alternative use for your eye patches (and I sincerely believe there's a market for a patch made to do what we used the Ortopad eye patches for).  In June of 2005 my son was diagnosed with leukemia.  He immediately had a port-a-cath (port) placed under his skin for the administration of chemotherapy.  A port is a permanent IV line accessed with a special needle.  EMLA cream is used to numb the site on the skin over the port so the child won't feel the poke of the needle.  The EMLA works best if it's been on for about 30 minutes, so we were instructed to apply the EMLA right before leaving the house on treatment days.  We were given several options for ways to cover up the EMLA and keep it in place so it could properly numb the site.  Unfortunately my son was extremely sensitive to the adhesives in the different kinds of tape we were told to use.  I finally dug out some old Ortopads, covered the soft pad in the middle with tape (so it wouldn't absorb the EMLA), and used Ortopads every time we had to go to the oncology clinic.  My son received chemotherapy for over 3 years (and still goes monthly for an infusion of medicine to help his immune system recover).  Every time a new nurse had to access his port, she would comment on how great the Ortopads were for covering the EMLA.  We ran out of Ortopads last month so I tried an option lots of cancer parents use: the food storage product Glad Press'n Seal.  My son had a horrible reaction and is still healing.  I'm going to the optometrist this week to see if I can get 8 more Ortopads to get us through until my son is finished with infusions and has his port removed.  Parents of kids with cancer are winging it when it comes to covering the EMLA on their child's port site.  A product manufactured to specifically address this need would be a first of its kind.  Circular pads without the soft pad in the middle but with the sensitive adhesive at the edges would be fabulous!  You could sell them to every pediatric oncology clinic in the country!  Thank you for making a difficult journey a little bit easier for my son."    - AB, Minnesota

 "Love them! Love them! Love them! My son has had to be patched on and off since he was 4 months old, he is now almost 3 years old. He hates the patching process and well when he hates it so do I because it is a crying battle...so we started rewards for the days he wore them and tried to make it fun by putting stickers on just plain brown ones you buy in any store, still it was a constant struggle!        "Thank you for creating a product that is so well designed and also provides some fun colors and designs. Our 18 month old has been struggling with her eyes for almost a year and we tried to patch her as recommended by her ophthalmologist but could only find the 3M brand available at the store. The patches did not stick very well and it was a big fight after Sarah learned how to reach up and pull off the patch. She also screamed when it was time to remove the patch and her skin was getting very irritated. Needless to say we stopped patching for a couple of months because after everything she has been through it felt like we were torturing her.
      Last week we returned Sarah to the ophthalmologist and he again recommended we start patching her eye for up to 3-4 hours a day.  "I want to thank you for such a great product. We started patching my daughter when she was 18 months. She is now 3-1/2. It's been a battle to say the least. We tried Coverlet Jr's, the 3M brand, adult size fabric black pirate looking patches and a special order child fabric patch. The adhesive ones irritated her face and left behind adhesive we had to scrub off and make her more irritated. All the adhesive and fabric patches she could wiggle her face and make them come off right at the nose. She would then peek out of the corner and defeat the purpose of patching. These are the first patch we have found that don't irritate her skin, leave residue or that she can wiggle off! She still hates to wear a patch because her vision is 20/200 in her bad eye, but this has made our life soooooooo much easier. Please don't ever discontinue these.       "I am a 40 year old woman who was born with a lazy eye and had to wear a patch as a child. I had surgery to fix it. However, about a month ago I started getting double vision and now my eye goes out. (I have a problem with my horizontal eye muscles). In order to see I have to patch one of my eyes until I have the corrective surgery in a week.
      I can't tell you the difficulty I had in trying to find an eye patch of any kind. None of the chains like CVS, Brooks, Walgreen's, etc.....even carry eye patches or the surgical gauze patches. I go to a small local pharmacy and they did have some other brands. They are very uncomfortable and cause a bad skin rash, but it's better than nothing.
      Then my ophthalmologist gave me some of your girls patches, I love them! They are very stylish, I can even match them to my outfits. Most of all they are comfortable against the skin, I haven't had any dryness or rashes, which was a big problem with the other brands. One was so itchy it caused a huge rash where the adhesive was and I had to apply Cortaid to it for a couple of days.
      I am older and more mature now, but I can remember the taunting and teasing, and name calling, "Pirate", "One-Eye", and some other amusing names. I was only 4 and didn't really understand why I had to wear an ugly brown patch over my right eye for almost 3 years. It was difficult. I cried a lot, and then I became very hostile and mean, calling the children names back. I began acting out in school, hitting other kids, and became intolerant of authority figures. I was pretty angry!
      Anyhow, why am I telling you all this? Well, I hope that today children have more understanding and empathy towards people's disabilities. This is greatly up to the parents, mine just didn't know. I think that your products are helpful in achieving acceptance and tolerance of this epidemic in our society of racism towards anybody that is "different". With the cute designs, I think that it would prompt kind conversation among children who have to patch.
      I just wish they were around 36 years ago. But, I survived and the experience taught me a great deal about people. To embrace our differences, and not to judge a book by it's cover. Truly, our differences or disabilities is what makes each single human being unique. Unique means original, one-of-a-kind, special. Today I know I am special and like who I am, I hope that young kids don't go through the angst and turmoil I did and realize they are special and that is a beautiful thing.
